The software behind this website is available at https://github.com/stongey/PhotoRestore

Several versions, including some plugins for Gimp photo processing software can be found there. Note however that the latest version of Gimp does not yet support python plugins. This site uses restore4.py which is the latest and seems to be the best. Obviously it is possible to find individual examples where one of the earlier versions gives better results.

A technical description of how it works can be read here.

The programs available on the above link are written in Python which can be installed on almost any computer. If you wish to process a large number of photos then downloading the python program is the best way. It is straightforward to install Python for Windows and run any of the programs. If you are daunted by this there is a single file python4A.exe which will run in Windows without any other program being installed. Unfortunately some virus protection software thinks that this file is dangerous and refuses to let you run it. This is almost certainly not true but it is up to you if you take the risk.

I can be contacted by email. To prevent automatic spamming of my address delete the x, y, z from gjxd@lionhyouse.pluzs.com to get the real address.

The current version of the website does not include checking that the uploaded file is a proper image. At the moment some error messages are produced so things like attempting to process a black-and-white picture or restore a picture that has deteriorated too badly should not fail with no explanation.

Currently only jpg images are supported. Downloading the restored image depends on the browser you are using; the filename may need to be changed and the extension .jpg added.
